The Bosch PR20EVSK Colt Variable Speed Router with Edge Guide is a versatile tool that's ideal for performing custom carpentry, trimming laminate flooring or deck planks, mortising hinges, dovetailing, and a host of other at-home and professional jobs. This router packs big power in a small, compact package for extended comfort and maximum accuracy.

Powerful Motor, Variable Speed, and Depth Adjustment for Precise Results
The PR20EVSK owes its robust performance to a 1.0-horsepower (the highest rating for small routers), 5.6-amp motor that spins at a variable speed of 16,000 to 35,000 RPM and has a soft-start that reduces startup torque. Additionally, depth adjustment is simple with the PR20EVSK: just align and lower the motor and then lock the router in position with the clamping level. Micro-fine adjustments are equally effortless thanks to the wheel on the back of the router's base.

To help you match the correct speed to the job, the included instruction manual features a chart showing the speed of each dial position, along with a list of the routing tasks that each setting may be used for.

User-Friendly Features for Flexibility, Comfort, and Reliability
This user-friendly tool offers simple, straightforward operation. First, the collect accepts standard 1/4-inch bits to give you job flexibility, with an impressive maximum diameter of 1-5/16 inch. For added convenience, a front spindle lock on the motor means easy, one-wrench bit changes, but a shaft wrench is also included for those who prefer to use two wrenches.

In addition, the speed dial is conveniently mounted on top of the tool body for easy access. An added bonus, the motor housing has a palm-shaped, rubber over-molded grip that allows for stable, one-handed operation. Finally, weighing about three pounds, the PR20EVSK offers a surprisingly rugged aluminum fixed base that's durable, solid, and reliable.

Constant Response Circuitry for Stable Motor Speed
This model includes Bosch's "Constant Response" circuitry, which monitors and maintains speed under load for consistent performance and overload protection. Constant Response works by detecting tough loads and then increasing power to maintain the selected RPM. Working with stable speed lets you concentrate on controlling the router, so you'll always make clean, burn-free cuts.

Additionally, a quick-clamp system allows the motor to be easily adjusted and moved from base to base. For further convenience, an angled cord exit keeps the router's cord safely out of your work area.

If you’ve ever wished for a smaller router that still had the power and accuracy of the standard models, Bosch made this for you.

This little Colt is little only in size. It’s 5.6 amp motor gives you all the power and speed of a big bruiser, with a variable speed of 16,000 to 35,000 rpm. Weighing in at just a hair over 3 pounds, it feels like a feather, so one-handed control is absolutely perfect. Bosch’s soft grip design is intuitive, and whether your hands are big or small, it fits just right, giving you complete control. Don’t worry about torque at startup, either, because the soft-start feature cushions it beautifully. The base has indentations that Bosch calls "finger support pockets," and they really do lend a great deal of control.

The collect accepts standard ¼-inch bits, so you’re virtually unlimited in the bit department, with a surprising maximum diameter of 1-5/16 inches. There’s a spindle lock on the front, so changing the bit out is a simple one-wrench operation. The speed dial is mounted on top of the tool body, and while some would prefer it closer to the grip, we don’t see a problem, since you’re gripping the tool with just one hand anyway.

Depth adjustment is among the easiest we’ve seen on a router. Just turn the motor till the triangle and "unlocked" symbol align, lower the motor to desired position, turn the motor so the triangle lines up with the "locked" symbol and close the clamping lever. If fine adjustment is necessary, it’s a breeze, courtesy of a wheel on the back of the base. Done.

We can think of hundreds of uses for this little workhorse, but those who’ve previously been intimidated by routers will absolutely love it, because it performs like a full-size router, yet it’s a fraction of the size and weight. It would be perfect for rounding-over deck planks and railings, hinge mortising, making decorative edges on hobby wood, and furniture, cutting slots, for use with a dovetail jig, making window cutouts, decorative inlays, trimming laminate and more. Pros, do-it-yourselfers and hobby woodworkers will all wonder how they got along without this little tool.

Wanting one of these for Christmas but not being able to decide which was best, I got into a long conversation with the manager at my Home Improvement store who did me the kindness of allowing me to borrow 2 shelf models for 2 weeks (with a credit card deposit I got back upon return) in return for giving them a thorough review on how both worked for their sales staff.

Score.

It paid off being an Amazon reviewer on that day.

I have always been able to find friends or family with items I wished to compare in the past but no one I know owns either of these so I was stumped until I found a win/win in staff training, a thorough review, and my getting to try them out.

I will say in advance I was not given anything free nor any discounts on the eventual purchase of either of these, and I did have to return both models at the end of my tests so I have no incentive to have a preference over either model.

So what two models did I compare?

Dremel 6800-01 /Trio Rotary Tool

Bosch PR20EVSIC

Why did I want one and a bit of background on me:
I am always doing home projects. I am a subscriber to many home improvement magazines and am never without a project. However, I'm not a tool wiz either although I'm great at building things with more "everyday" tools. Cutting and things like that, however, always had to be done by someone else.

So I decided to step it up a notch and this makes it so easy. I actually took an 10 foot art table that runs along my studio wall and made it into a very pretty piece by adding a base to it to hide my rolling drawers under the table and I played with doing some more intricate cuts to pimp out my chicken coop in a way that would make every other coop owner jealous. I also made a beautiful folding screen for the corner of the living room and a Hickory frame around a bathroom mirror and a shelf for my kitchen.

I can't wait til Christmas when I will get long-term play with one from Santa.

I'll refer to the Dremel and D and the Bosch as B from here on out to make the comparison easy:

WHAT YOU GET:
D: Trio Tool
TR800 Straight Edge/Circle Guide Attachment
TR563 Trio High Speed Cutter (Carbide)
Trio Mandrel TR407
½" 60 grit sanding band (2)
½" 120 grit sanding band (2)
½" 240 grit sanding band (2)
1/4" Straight Router Bit
Wrench
Storage Case

B:tool,
drop-forged collet and shaft,
wrenches,
fixed base,
collet,
straight edge guide,
case.

WEIGHT:
D: 2.8 lbs
B:3.1 lbs
both seem very well built

SIZE:
D:13x10x8
B:15x13x8

SPEED/ROTATIONS PER MINUTE:
D:10-20,000
B:15-35,000

MOTOR:
D:2.0 amp
B:5.6 amp 1 horsepower

HOLD:
D: You hold this as you would a drill, with a handle. I found this comfortable but not as comfortable for horizontal surfaces as I did the Bosch.
B: While I typically felt I needed two hands to properly guide the Dremel, I did not with the Bosch since you hold it gripped in your hand with the router beneath your grip for easy usage. It's hard to describe this grip other than something you'd need power behind...like a shovel handle.

BITS:
D: The tool comes with the bits which is convenient EXCEPT you can only use the very limited selection of Dremel bits made for this item with it. That means you are totally limited in what you can do and the quality of the bits.
B: There are NO bits with the kit and I think there should be, however, this takes ANY standard router bit so you are pretty much unlimited in what you want to use it for as well as being able to get really good quality bits. For example, I borrowed a self-piloted bit from a friend enabling me to do a curved edge for a board at the end of a table-top. I also found the Dremel bits to be too easily broken but you have no other choice but to use their bits with that tool regardless of price or needs.

COLLET CAPACITY:
D:3/16"
B: 1/4"

WARRANTY:
D: 2 years
B: 1 year

DEPTH ADJUSTMENT:
D:You turn a large screw-like piece on the side
B:Very different. It allows for both micro and macro adjustments and has a labeled guide in both imperial and metric measurements so you have absolutely precise depth as compared to the Dremel via turning a dial.

SPEED ADJUSTMENT:
D: The Dremel didn't have it. If I hit a knot in the wood, it broke speed and made it difficult to cut.
B: Bosch had it. If I hit a knot in the wood it has an auto-sensor to relate this and the speed increases to an amount to keep it exactly at the same speed throughout the cut even if you hit something that is harder to cut through.

CUTTING CIRCLES:
D: They made this very easy with a circle cutting guide that comes with it.
B: The Bosch has the straight cutting guide but that cutting guide doesn't come with the circle cutter.

SPEED ADJUSTMENT:
D; At the base
B: At the top of the tool
(see speeds listed at the top of the review) They both used dials for this purpose. Both were easy.

POWER:
Obviously as you can see from the RPM and speeds, the Bosch is a workhorse as compared to a friendly mule of the Dremel. It's not that I didn't like the Dremel, but you really don't get near the power of the Bosch and that makes it far harder for tough wood and hard surfaces. You wind up having to push through on those items and that wears down or breaks the bits which increases the cost in addition to already having to pay for the softer bits to begin with.

ADDITIONALLY: I felt the straight edge guide of the Bosch was easier and of better quality although I liked the circular guide of the Dremel. I'm just not sure I'd need it, however, as I can still do easy curves on the Bosch.

Conclusion: Although I'd likely be happy with the Dremel had I not gotten to work with the Bosch, the Bosch far outperformed the Dremel in all ways I needed it to for me personally. It was easier to use and get precise cuts for me and the motor was far better, meaning hard wood and hard surfaces were more like cutting through butter than cutting through with difficulty and low speed. Additionally, I wish it came with a choice of bits but I have unlimited choices in bits and actually bought lots of cheap ones on Craigslist that are of excellent quality whereas I can only use the Dremel bits with the Dremel and that limits my projects as well as not being able to buy better quality bits.

I have no affiliation with either company.

I had no other difficulties other than those listed here in either tool. The big difficulty I found was simply the Dremel when hitting wood knots or having the power to work through harder surfaces. I didn't have any difficulty in changing bits or any other issue with either model.

I returned both items as promised and hope to be able to compare other routers in the future. However, the Bosch goes on my list for Santa.
