My goal was an easily mod'ed cheap laptop. I wanted a laptop that would not break the bank but give my enough performance to keep me happy.

The 3 top choices came down to the Samsung series 3 NP305E5A-A03US at $449, the Toshiba Satellite L755D-S5162 at $429 and this Asus model at $399. all three models are very similar in that they share the same AMD A6 3420M APU and design. Not only did Asus crush them in price, (well, Amazon did), but in features by offering the largest hard drive (750GB VS 640GB-Toshiba VS 500GB-Samsung) and Super Speed USB 3.0 port.

Asus A53Z-AS61 $400

My total out of pocket cost was $670. Of course the prices vary with Amazon on a daily basis.

Here is what I did and how it worked out:

I removed the HDD and optical DVD drive. I cloned the stock drive to the SSD and installed. I installed the original HDD in the SATA cady and reinstalled in the optical drive bay. I use the SSD for the OS as the boot drive and the HDD for DATA files and scratch. The SATA is only Rev 2 (3Gb/s) instead of Rev 3 at 6Gb/s but that is to be expected at this price and I am okay with it. I did not RAID these but did partition the HDD for back up duty. i installed the DVD optical drive in the USB enclosure and as a portable USB DVD is much better utilized. There are 2 RAM slots that will accept 8GB sticks for a total of 16GB RAM.

I over-clocked the APU using K10STAT which is very easy. Google `over-clock AMD A6 3400'. I went with 2.4GHz instead of 1.9GHz and so far seem stable. I do run hot and do use a laptop cooler to keep temps in check.

Benchmarks are on par with Intel i5 processors (with the over-clock), and graphics just slightly better than Intel. 3Dmark scores are much lower than my Asus that has a GT540M but better than Intel 3000.

I use this for 3d modeling of architectural renderings, Adobe suites and when bored a game or two. This will slow down and take its time with Chief Architect and LR but not so much that it crashes. FP games set on medium work well enough to play but won't knock your socks off.

Overall impression is good. Keyboard, track pad and ergonomics fit me well. The extra bonus was the 3.0 super speed USB port.

Pros: Powerful for the price, HDMI, built-in webcam, media card slot, USB 3.0 port, keyboard doesn't feel cheap, decent size screen, stays relatively cool during everything but gaming- but even then it doesn't get TOO hot.
