Power and Performance

The DWP611 compact router features a 1-1/4 peak HP motor that delivers significantly more power than competitors' models to help you be as productive as possible. The variable speed control helps you to better manage the tool and determine the speed that is best suited for the application at hand. A low, contoured grip that is close to the work surface also contributes to an excellent level of control--providing both precision and productivity on the job site. The soft starting motor features full time electronic feedback that maintains motor speed through the cut. An adjustment ring enables controlled bit depth changes to within 1/64-inch.

Comfort and Convenience

The fixed base's dual LEDs and clear sub-base ensure maximum visibility in operation. The extended 1/4-inch router collet provides greater bit contact with the bit shaft than traditional routers, allowing you a firm grip on the bit and less vibration. The D-shaped sub-base provides stability and flatness when running edge profiles, and the spindle lock has been designed to greatly improve the ease of bit change by incorporating a large button that can be actuated with the same hand that stabilizes the router.

The plunge base features a clear and precise depth scale and marker, a release-to-lock lever to maintain the designated depth setting, and rubber handles for a non-slip grip. It delivers excellent user control via its smooth and light depth stroke, and the five-step adjustable turret stop enables stepped plunge cuts for accuracy and consistency.

The router also features two tabs that allow for a quick and simple base release, and a new base/adjustable clamp design so the motor location is maintained through the toughest applications.

Being a Porter Cable shop when it comes to routers, I spotted this palm router to be far superior to the Bosch Colt that has been in the market for years and has a huge following. First of all as it has been mentioned, Dewalt's DWP611PK is designed after the PC 690 series routers - a very reliable method of setting the bit depth. You see this design in the fixed base and plunge base. The plunge base will except the STANDARD Porter Cable bushings and will also accept the router edge guide for the 690 Porter Cable. The LED lighting makes routing so much easier and should be on all routers in my opinion. Soft start and variable speed is a very nice touch and the horsepower (1.25HP) is the most on the market from a palm router. Both bases have a flat edge which works very well with routing dados with a straight edge.

I'm very happy with this router and if you are considering a palm router for your shop, get this one. Even if you don't think you'll use the plunge base, you will be glad that you have it and find that it's indispensable.

This router is made for hand work. It holds easy and you can move around in tight spaces. Leave deep hog-out work for the big boys unless you have a way to step into the work. The small base and light weight does not lend this unit to heavy cuts. If Dewalt comes out with a bigger base then that issue would go away. Routed out (36) pockets on a project I am working on using a 1/2" and 3/8" bits. All pockets were done freehand and looked great; clean staight cuts with no pull-in at the corners. On 1/4" bits I would recommend spiral flutes rather than straight flutes due to heat-up issues with the bit. The router has more than enough power to handle the loads it was designed for.

Review after (3) months of use.
Made some ajustments to the base clamp system and now the tool powers through cuts OK. Chip build-up around the base is a problem when doing long straight cuts. I suggest leaving .01 on the depth for the final pass then a no-load pass to get the bottom of the cut smooth and clean. Otherwise, it is a well thought out power tool espesially with the LED lights. Bottom line - the more you use this tool, the more you will appreciate its capability.

I was initially looking at the Bosch Colt after reading a magazine review. I wanted to get a "smaller" router for inlay work and the occational edge routing (I mainly use a router table). I went to a local Big Box Store to check it out the Colt in person and came across the Dewalt. It was a bit more expensive, but had some really nice features that the Colt didn't have such as the LED lights, plunge base option and the larger, more robust motor. I took the "plunge" on the Dewalt after reading reviews for a while. I finally got to use it for the first time and was pleasantly suprised by it's soft start motor, similar to my full sized Bosch that "pemanantly" sits in my router table and the LED's. It's a real joy to use a quality tool when woodworking...makes such a huge difference in my opinion. I also added the dust colletion shroud for the pluge base....it works so-so, but that my be due to the long run I have of 1.5 ID hose I have going to it from my 4" DC hose..just last night it did plug up, so there may be some fiddling that needs to be done here.

Overall...if you are on the fence between the standard base model or the plunge base kit, for the extra money, it's nice to have that option right away...well worth the money as the smoothness and ease of operation of the plunge base was well thought out. The 1.25 HP motor is plenty strong for most uses, especially since one really shouln't route out too much material in one pass or with 1/4" router bits anyway. As far as the Colt vs. Dewalt debate...I can't comment on the pros or cons of the Colt, but if you go with the Dewalt I don't think you will have any regrets. I'm glad I spent the extra money for this "little" BIG router.Bosch 18V Compact, Milwaukee 9072-22 , Hitachi C8FSE 8-1, DEWALT DCK266L, DEWALT DW120K, Rockwell RK5108K, Bosch 11245EVS , Makita 9920, Hitachi NR90ADPR , Milwaukee ML2691-84, JET 354165 JDP-15M , Milwaukee 2651-22 , Porter-Cable 691, Makita LS1040, Festool 571782, Hitachi NR90AE, Makita GD0800C, Bosch 4100DG-09 , Milwaukee 6242-6, Makita DA4031, DEWALT DC823KA, Jet 414458 HVBS-56M , Powermatic 1791310 , Makita 4351FCT , Festool TS 55 , Bosch HD21-2, Flex XC3401VRG, QEP 83200 , Fein FMM 250Q, DEWALT D55151, DEWALT DW712, DEWALT DCK210S2, Fein FMM 250, Makita BTD141, JET 629004K, Makita 9741, Bosch BSH180B, Paslode 501000, Hardin CCGRINPOLSET, Festool 567852 , Bosch 24618-01, Milwaukee 6515-87, Makita JN1601, Hitachi CN16SA, Makita BTW251, Ryobi ZRRTS20, Milwaukee 2694-24 , Makita KP0810, Twincut Technology, Hobart 500553, SECCO WV5GRIN, Induction Innovations IDIMD700, Hitachi NV83A3

I have to say that this router is really sweet! Ordered this little monster and had it 1.5 days later thanks to Amazon Prime! The item was very well packaged and very much complete. As soon as I opened the box and found the plug it went straight into the garage to the nearest outlet. Set the speed dial to 1 and pushed the rubber coated sealed switch and it started ever so beautifully and the twin LED lights on the bottom really pumped out some awesome vivid light!

The speed dial is really smooth and holds position very well no moving or backing off despite higher RPMS it stays where u place it and there is no vibration that i can feel. If you run cheap poorly balanced router bits in any router you will feel vibration. However The 500+ pieces of 1/2in shank Tungsten Carbide and diamond tip bits I got from a local machine shop auction sale are pristine and this router makes them shine even more so. NOTE:The unit only comes with a 1/4inch Collet for 1/4 shank router bits. For smaller lighter woods and bits Id suggest using the smaller shank and this will do you just fine. But for larger Bits and dense materials, Id suggest using the thicker more true 1/2 collette and 1/2in shank router bits. While Carbide bits are more expensive 1/2in shanks are really the only way to go as it reduces the chance for flexing.

Its compact lightweight and simple to use features and adjustments seriously make me very pleased that I did not order another large router. Its really easy to remove from its fixed base to the plunge base and the stability of both is really solid. Depth adjustment is a breeze and its very secure! At 1.25hp it has plenty of getup and go and because you can set the dial and control the rpms in a broad spectrum, its amazing for setting to whatever material you are cutting. I made several doors using solid red oak, aldar, maple, redwood and built a router table to hold it and man its an little monster. Ate right through everything! AWESOME! If you use cheap bits its still amazing however cheap bits make for cheap cuts and cheap results. If you are just starting out with routing do yourself a favor and try a really nice Freud Bit versus a Ryobi or Skil bit on a piece of pine and you will see what I mean. Its very smooth and fast! Id give this thing 10stars easy! Especially for the price!!! Cant beat this deal!
