I needed a handheld cordless vacuum to do quick pick ups between the garage and kitchen. And since i already have a pair of DeWalt batteries(14v), this one fit the bill. I've been using this unit mostly in the kitchen and it works great,, ground coffee, bread crumbles, dry spices, rice, tiny garlic and onion peels that usually find their way on the floor is no more. The best part is i can easily switch fresh batteries when the charge runs down and if not, i can plug into the wall. It's kind of bulky around the kitchen but it's super easy to handle.

Almost bought a B&D handheld but found out the battery life and charging was a still a pain with the newer models, you must wait until the next day to finish what you started or pull out the big vacuum... (I had an old dustbuster and remembered.) Also considered the Dyson but i think it's way overpriced.

a) Pellet stove ashes (cool ones obviously, make sure you clean the fliter every time)
b) It easily hooks to my Dewalt orbital sander for dust (wood and sheetrock).
c) Quick pick-ups around the house.
d) Quick clean of the car.
e) Light to medium pick-ups in smaller and harder to reach areas.

I use a lithium ion battery and it lasts a while (10 minutes of constant running is a long time for a vacuum).

Here's what it's not good for:

a) Heavy-duty jobs that you would normally use a standard size shop-vac for.
b) "Thorough" cleaning of the carpets in your car (if you haven't cleaned the car all winter, you're beyond what this will do for you :)
c) Long-running battery jobs (unless you have a lot of charged batteries). I sometimes do computer PC repair out of the back of a SUV and don't have AC power, so I was looking for some kind of a compressor that worked off of battery or 12V. Although there were some options available, they weren't what I was looking for. I have another 2 gallon AC vacuum that I love for vacuuming dust out of a PC and using it as sort of an air compressor to blow dust out of. I have a reducer to maximize the pressure yet it's not too much for the computer components. I found the Dewalt DC500 which had the ability to use the rechargeable batteries and it also had the exhaust port option.
